Stadium Tech as Subset of Smart City

Stadium Tech as Subset of Smart City

2025-03  As major sporting events compete with other discretionary spending, for example, other forms of entertainment, understanding the customer journey and making experiences ‘frictionless’ and ‘personalized’ have become important objectives for event organisers, league and club operators and venue owners. The smart stadium as a technology platform can help to engage fans and patrons.

Besides architectural design, material selection and facility layout, integration of different technologies comes to be of greater importance. As technologies are evolving quickly and product cycles seemingly shorten, future proofing such investments pose complex and difficult challenges. Applying the notion that a smart stadium is a subset of the smart city concept [1] may help to view the stadium infrastructure as a technology platform that can adapt and grow with change. Besides questions in relation to the use of advanced materials, sustainability of installation and operations, integration of IoT, communication and broadcasting technologies are important to provide experiences to patrons and engage fans without distracting from the core product, i.e. the sport being played.
